Kindergarten Readiness
Since February 2005, many efforts in Northern Kentucky have focused on reaching the goals of Vision 2015, our regional strategic plan. One of the major goals for education is that by 2015, "all children will enter kindergarten with the skills needed to succeed." When work began on that goal, it became clear that there was no consistent understanding of what "ready for kindergarten" meant, nor was there any agreement on how to measure readiness. For the past two years, the Northern Kentucky Council of Partners has been engaged in a collaborative initiative with Northern Kentucky University and United Way Success by 6© to develop a regional definition of kindergarten readiness, and to work toward a consistent means of measuring whether children are indeed entering kindergarten with the skills to succeed.
As the result of region-wide surveys, focus groups, and other research, those working on this initiative developed a draft kindergarten readiness definition, and circulated it widely throughout the region for input and comments. As of Fall 2008, that definition was finalized, and after several months of conversations with school districts, all eighteen have expressed their support and agreement to help distribute the brochure containing the definition. In addition, most districts have agreed to use one of two preferred screening tools, the DIAL 3 or the Brigance. We are very pleased with the progress on this initiative, and think it will result in better understanding of what parents, preschools, and other care givers can do to help children be prepared for school.
